The NI WSN-3230 serial node features one RS232 port to interface with serial sensors, instruments, and control boards. Using the LabVIEW WSN Module and the LabVIEW Serial Compatibility API, you can deploy graphical code to embed command, query, and parse algorithms to the node, which creates a local, autonomous communication loop between the node and the serial device.

The LabVIEW Serial Compatibility API helps you configure baud rate, stop bits, parity bits, and flow control. Using the API, you can initialize the serial channel, send commands to the serial device, and then read back and parse the returned data, all locally without over-the-air communication and associated latency. Then you can send important data over the air back to the WSN gateway/host machine.

With deployed LabVIEW WSN code, you can conduct local data analysis, respond to digital value changes or network status changes, and perform local control of the two digital I/O lines. The digital I/O lines feature industrial ranges and can be configured for input, sinking output, and sourcing output.

The WSN-3230 also features a sensor power output channel, which delivers up to 50 mA at 12 V, and can be used to deliver power to external devices or sensors. You can power the measurement node with four 1.5 V, AA alkaline or lithium battery cells, or you can externally power the node with a 5 to 30 V supply (not included). Additionally, the device supports battery backup; in the event external power is lost, the device automatically switches over to battery power.

A 2.4 GHz radio is used to wirelessly transmit data to the WSN gateway, where you can connect through Ethernet to other network devices. NI-WSN software delivers easy network configuration in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) and data extraction with LabVIEW software.

You can configure the WSN-3230 as a mesh router to increase network distance and connect more nodes in your WSN system. You can connect eight end nodes (star topology) or up to 36 measurement nodes (mesh topology) to a single WSN gateway, with outdoor range up to 300 m with line of sight. The device also offers industrial temperature and shock and vibration ratings.

Wireless products require certification based on the geographic region of use. Consult the Wireless Product Certifications document link in the Resources tab to determine which products are certified in your region.
